September, Fridays, and Flames

It’s the second day of September, my favorite month of the year. And that’s right, fellow readers! Next week will be our very first Flaming Friday! You didn’t forget about it, did you?

I know I haven’t. I’m ready to give you more information than you ever wanted to know about Rahab and her world. Next week we’ll kick things off with a status update and overview of future events. Because you all know how much I like to plan and have things organized!

Before we get too focused on my novel, here’s a glimpse of what’s been going on in my writing world. Courtney Cantrell, fellow writer and Consortium-ist, gave an update of her works in progress this week, and I think it’s about time I did the same.

• I’m starting my second month as a children’s book editor at Tate Publishing. I’ve got nothing remarkable to report on this front. It’s going pretty well. Except that since I’m going on vacation in the third week of September, I’m worried I’ll fall behind so I’m trying to get ahead on my reading right now.
• As Courtney mentioned in her post, I’m editing her second book, Shadows after Midnight. I keep getting distracted from it by other things, but I better get a move on because I need to be done with it by the end of September.
• The Consortium’s first short story electronic magazine is coming out later this month (if all goes according to plan). Bailey Thomas and I are the chief copyeditors on this project and also doing some line editing along with the magazine’s associate editors, Courtney and Josh Unruh.
• Trying to finish this draft of Into the Flames. But that’s what Flamin’ Friday is all about, so we’ll skip over it for now.
• Supposedly the Consortium is getting interns from the English Department of Oklahoma Christian. This is my and Bailey’s alma mater (the department as well as the university), so hopefully we’ll be conducting interviews, selecting interns, and training them in the wonderful world of editing here pretty soon.
• Not only is the Consortium coming out with A Consortium of Worlds, our short story mag, but we’re also working on getting together some stand-alone short stories. I have to edit those, and reading them makes me want to write my own short stories. So I’ve kind of been doing that on the side instead of writing on Into the Flames.
• I’m behind on my reading and am still trying to hone my expertise in the Young Adult Fantasy Genre. Also, in case last week’s blog post didn’t alert you, I’m totally into Steampunk now. So I’m trying to find some good Steampunk books to add to my repertoire.

Well, that’s about it for now. Now that Bailey has joined our eager (meager? both?) troupe, I’ve got someone to ease the burden of editing. Which is giving me my first lesson in delegating! Fortunately Bailey is up to the task. And somehow, now that we’ve got two editors, the Consortium is generating a lot more stuff for us to edit. I’m going to assume that this is a good thing. Huzzah and Tally-ho!
